Unit Services

Here at Fairfield hospital we have a combined Intensive Care Unit, High Dependency and Coronary Care Unit a total of ten (10) beds plus one transitional bed which opened in January 2008. Patients in the unit can be placed on monitors that show us their heart rate and their blood pressure. We also have machines (called ventilators) that can assist the patient in their breathing.

Our services cater for patients who need acute cardiac (non-surgical) care, post operative high dependency care and acute short term ventilatory support until transferred out to a tertiary facility for long term support.

If the patient does not improve or needs the support of other specialised equipment such as dialysis (kidney machine), or they have multi organ failure, or ongoing ventilatory support the patient will need to be transferred to an intensive care unit that provides these specialised services.

Patients that require specialised care – e.g. burns, major trauma, brain (neuro) surgery or heart (cardiac) surgery will not come to our unit at all but will be transferred as soon as possible to a specialised intensive care unit at another hospital.

Children (16 years or younger) who need intensive care services also need special care and they too will be transferred to a specialised intensive care unit at another hospital.

Unit Staff

One Intensivist (part-time) One (1) doctor (CMO) with JMO support Monday – Friday 7.30–1600 hrs. After hours and on weekends the unit is covered with Locums. Without the assistance of a JMO. The Unit has a Nurse Unit Manager and Clinical Nurse Educator Monday – Friday and a supernumery nursing Team Leader.
The unit is networked with Bankstown Intensive Care whereby an Intensivist is rostered to come to Fairfield to review all High Dependency Patients.
There is a senior nurse in charge of the unit every shift. If a patient needs help with their breathing (on a ventilator) then this patient will be nurses one to one, until the patient is transferred out to a larger hospital. The other patients are nursed one nurse to 3-4 patients.

Our unit also has the help of Allied Health Professionals such as a physiotherapist, pharmacist, dietician and social worker Monday – Friday.
