Unit Services

Albury Base Hospital Critical Care Unit has up to 10 beds that are able to provide care to patients requiring intensive care, high dependency or coronary care services.

We are able to provide services ranging from simple monitoring of the heart and blood pressure to more complex care of patients requiring support of breathing by use of machines called ventilators.

While we are able to provide a wide range of services, at times it is necessary to transfer patients to metropolitan units for more specialised care. Due to our close proximity to Melbourne the usual referral pattern is to Melbourne hospitals.

The type of specialised care that we care that we can not provide includes care of major burns, brain surgery, cardiac surgery or paediatric care requiring support of breathing machines.

Unit Staffing

A director who works Monday to Thursday provides the medical cover. At other times a Specialist Doctor covers the unit on a daily basis. After hours a specialist provides cover by phone and a registrar provides on site cover.

The Nursing Staff work 12 hour shifts and a senior trained critical care nurse is in charge of each shift.

Allied Health Staff that support the unit include physiotherapists, dietitian and social worker that all work as part of the specialised team providing a high quality of car to the patients.
