Unit Services
Here at Canterbury Hospital we have an Intensive Care Unit (the Grevillea Unit) which has twelve (12) centrally monitored beds. Patients in the unit can be placed on cardiac monitors
that show us their heart rate and their blood pressure. Eight (8)
Telemetry units allow ambulant patients to have continuous heart
monitoring. We also have machines (called ventilators) that can assist the patient with their breathing.
Not all patients who come to our unit will require a ventilator to help
them breathe. Other devices to assist with breathing are also available.
The Grevillea Unit is designated as a Level 4 Intensive Care Unit able
to provide continuous invasive and / or non-invasive haemodynamic
monitoring for all twelve (12) patients. The unit is also capable of
acute short-term ventilatory support (up to 24 hours duration) until
the patient is transferred out to a tertiary facility for ongoing
long-term management.
Our services cater for patients who require acute cardiac (non-surgical) care, post operative High Dependency
care as well as acute high dependency medical care for conditions such
as respiratory failure requiring non-invasive ventilatory support.
After admission, if the patient does not improve or requires
specialised care – e.g. burns, major trauma, brain (neuro) surgery or
heart (cardiac) surgery or needs the support of other specialised
equipment such as dialysis
(kidney machine), they will need to be transferred to another intensive
care unit that provides these specialised services. These services are
normally accessed elsewhere within the Sydney South West Area Health
Service; though the majority of transfers are predominantly sent to RPA or Concord Hospitals.
Children (16 years or younger) who need intensive care services will be
transferred immediately to a specialised intensive care unit at one of
the children’s hospitals.
Unit Staff
The Grevillea Unit has an extensive network of dedicated nursing and medical staff who work in multidisciplinary teams
to support patients. A senior Registered Nurse is in charge of each
shift. The staff also includes those nursing staff who are gaining
experience and qualifications in Intensive Care Nursing / High
Dependency Nursing and New Graduate nurses who rotate through the Unit
during their training. The education and training of all nursing staff
is supported with the assistance of our full-time Clinical Nurse
Educator.
A comprehensive health care team,
including Social Work, Physiotherapist, Pharmacist, Speech Pathologist,
Occupational Therapist, Diabetes Consultant, Infectious Diseases
Respiratory consultant, and Stomal Therapy consultant, are available to
assist with the management of patients and offer guidance and support
to families/carers.
Other Hospital Services
The Grevillea Unit also provides senior nursing staff support to the Medical Emergency Team (MET), which operates throughout the hospital campus 24 hours a day.
