Our Critical Care Unit at Dubbo Base Hospital (DBH) has 12 beds. The bed configuration consists of: 4 Intensive Care beds, predominantly for multi-trauma/ respiratory failure, 4 Coronary Care beds for the acute cardiac episode/ cardiac monitoring and 4 High Dependency beds for post-operative management.
The Critical Care Team provides a service to approximately 1350 patients each year for patients requiring post-operative management as well as those with such conditions as:

Some of the services we provide are ventilation (invasive and non-invasive), cardiac monitoring, continuous dialysis, temporary pacemaker insertion, and exercise stress testing.
Patients that require specialised care e.g. burns, major trauma, brain (neuro) surgery or heart (cardiac) surgery, are stabilised at our hospital before they are transferred to a specialised Intensive Care Unit at another health care facility.
Macquarie Area Health Service (MAHS) is currently in negotiation with Midwestern Area Health Service to strengthen medical governance with the development of a Supraregional Director for Critical Care Services.
Unit Staff
Within the Critical Care Unit at DBH there is a designated ICU Director and a senior VMO. The Senior VMO is available in the unit from 8am-5pm, 7 days a week, with other senior doctors and anaesthetists helping out with an on-call roster. When these doctors are not present in the unit, they can be reached by telephone.
From a nursing perspective, the Unit is supported by a Nursing Unit Manager, Clinical Nurse Consultant, Clinical Nurse Educator, and a Research Nurse. There is a senior nurse in charge of the unit every shift. If a patient requires ventilatory support, then there is a ratio of one nurse to one patient.
Other Hospital Services
There is a multidisciplinary support network who are available to visit the Critical Care Unit. These include physiotherapist, pharmacist, dietician, social worker, and Aboriginal Liaison Officer.
