Unit Services
Here at Gosford Hospital we have a thirteen (13) bed intensive care unit, which caters for all age groups. All our patients are placed on cardiac monitors, which shows the patients heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels and breathing rate. Not all patients require a breathing machine (ventilator) to assist their breathing or dialysis (kidney machine) to treat their kidneys.
Patients who require specialised care for brain (neurosurgical) assessment, cardiothoracic surgery, or burns would be transferred to hospitals that cater for these patients. That could be John Hunter Hospital, Newcastle; Royal North Shore Hospital, St Leonard’s or Concord Hospital, Concord, depending on the availability of beds.
Children can be treated in our Unit. We have a Paediatric Intensivist on staff. Children with complex problems are transferred to the Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick, or the Westmead Children’s Hospital.
Unit Staff
There are five (5) Doctors (Intensive Care Staff Specialists) who have been trained in Intensive Care Medicine. They are on duty seven (7) days and alternate the responsibility for patient care. We also have other experienced doctors who assist with care on a twenty four (24) hour basis.
We have a Team Leader on each shift and a team of highly qualified Nursing staff to deliver quality patient care. Relatives wishing to speak with the Doctor can make arrangements with the Nurse looking after the patient.
Our Unit has the support of Allied Health Professionals such as a physiotherapist, pharmacist, dietician, and social worker. Gosford Hospital also has a Coronary Care Unit for patients with heart disease.
