Unit Services

Goulburn Base Hospital has a 6-bed combined adult Intensive Care Unit / High Dependency Unit /Coronary Care Unit. The unit caters for patients who may need breathing assistance with invasive and non-invasive ventilation. Some patients may also require admission to the unit after undergoing surgery. Patients who have had a heart attack or unstable angina may also be admitted to the unit for close monitoring. When a patient is admitted to the unit, their heart rate, blood pressure, breathing rate and oxygen levels are monitored from the bedside and on a central monitor located at the nurses’ station.

If the doctor suspects narrowing or blockage of the heart (coronary) arteries, it may be necessary to perform an angiogram and the patient will be transferred to a coronary care unit with diagnostic angiography. Patients who require specialised care due to injury or disease to their kidneys (needing dialysis) , or surgery to their brain, heart, lung, or burns management will be transferred to an intensive care unit in Canberra or Sydney.

Children as a general rule are not admitted to our unit, they are transferred to The Canberra Hospital, The Sydney Children’s Hospital in Randwick or the Westmead Children’s Hospital. These hospitals have facilities and staff specialist to care for children with complex conditions.

Unit Staff

Qualified nursing staff are rostered over a 24-hour day to deliver and coordinate patient care. If a patient is unstable and requiring ventilation, the patient will have a nurse/patient ratio of 1:1 each shift. The doctors who provide 24 hour medical cover to the unit are specialist physicians, anaesthetists and surgeons. The care of the patient may alternate between these doctors. If relatives or carers wish to speak to a doctor, the nurse caring for the patient will be able to make the necessary arrangements. The on duty hospital doctor also assists in the unit.
Some of the other Allied Health Professionals our unit has access to are pastoral care, social worker, dietician, pharmacist, physiotherapy and an aboriginal health liaison officer.
