Unit Services

Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital is found in the northern most suburbs of Sydney. Close to the F3 freeway which takes you north of Sydney.
This unit has 13 beds which has a mixture of Intensive Care patients & High Dependency patients.

The patients that come to the unit are able to be “monitored”. This tells us such things as Heart rate, blood pressure & oxygen levels in the blood. We also have seven machines that will help assist our patient’s to breath (called Ventilators). Not all patient’s need help with their breathing but those that do may require help in many and varied ways some examples would be giving drugs to help breathing such as Ventolin, Frusemide, supplemented oxygen through a mask. Machines that assist breathing through a mask and ventilators that give help through a tube that will go into the patients lungs through the neck (tracheostomy) mouth (endotracheal tube) or nose.

The Intensive Care Unit has 2 dialysis machines should your kidneys not be working as well as they should be or failing, the ability to support other organs with drugs to insert pacemakers to help the heart beat and catheters and lines to help monitor changes in body functions such as Central Venous Catheters and Pulmonary Artery Catheters which help diagnose and monitor heart and lung functions.

Patients who need specialized care in areas such as burns, trauma, brain (Neuro) surgery or heart (cardiac) surgery will be transferred to another Intensive Care Unit.

Unit Staff

We have four Specialist Doctors working in ICU who work a week at a time. They are present in the unit daily for a week at a time and oversee the care of the patient while in ICU. We have five registrars (very experienced doctors) who are present in the unit 7 days / 24hrs per day. They do 12 hour shifts from 8 - 8 and our Resident Medical Officer who work 7 days a week and are in the unit 24hrs a day through 12hr shifts from 7 – 7.

The medical staff not only conduct rounds on a daily basis to monitor / plan and change therapy to the patient but respond to changes in the patient’s condition as they occur.

The patient’s are cared for by a dedicated team of nurses the majority of whom have specialized in the care of Intensive Care patients. If the patient is extremely sick or requiring support with kidney machines or breathing machines then the nurse will look after that patient on their own. If no support is required with breathing machine then more than 1 patient may be looked after by the same nurse. There is a Nursing Unit Manager on duty Mon – Fri 8 – 4.30. This job is shared by 2 Nurses at present.

Our units patient’s and family’s are supported and helped by Allied Health Teams such as physiotherapy, pharmacist, dietitian, social worker, chaplains, occupational therapists and other specialist fields.
