Unit Services
Mona Vale hospital has an intensive care unit that is part of the Northern Beaches Intensive Care Service. We have five beds to look after patients who need intensive care or coronary care treatment. Patients may be admitted to intensive care from the emergency department, operating theatre, hospital ward or sometimes transferred from another hospital. We have monitors to monitor heart rhythm, blood pressure, oxygen level and breathing rate. Sometimes patients need breathing support from a ventilator.
If patients require more specialised care such as heart surgery, burns care or brain surgery they are transferred to an intensive care unit in another hospital. Children who need intensive care are also transferred to a specialist children’s unit in another hospital.
Unit Staff
One of three Intensive Care Specialists will look after the patients in the unit at any one time. They are on call 24 hours a day. A more junior doctor looks after the patients under the direction of the specialist. Specially trained nurses work in the unit. They are lead by the Nurse Unit Manager who works weekdays. There is a senior nurse in charge of the unit on every shift.
One nurse will often look after a single patient if they are very sick, otherwise a nurse will take care of two patients during a shift. Other important members of the team include physiotherapists, dieticians, pharmacists and social workers. Patients may also need other hospital services to treat them, such as CT scanner, other specialist medical doctors and surgeons or endoscopy services.
