Unit Services
At Nepean Hospital, we have an eighteen (18) bed Intensive Care Unit, capable of caring for thirteen (13) ventilated and five (5) High Dependency patients. All patients while in our unit will be attached to a cardiac monitor, which displays the heart rate, blood pressure and the level of oxygen within the person’s blood (oxygen saturation). We have a variety of ways of supporting a patient’s breathing during their stay if it becomes necessary. These include oxygen masks, CPAP (Continuous Positive Airways Pressure) machine, BiPAP (BiLevel Positive Airway Pressure) machine and ventilators. Our unit can also support patients with acute renal failure (kidneys) by performing dialysis in the short term.
Patients that require cardiac (heart) surgery or have burns will be transferred to another hospital as soon as possible. Children (12 years or younger depending on body weight) who need special care will also be transferred to a specialized hospital.
Unit Staff
There are six(6) Intensive Care Specialists who have been trained in Intensive Care medicine. They are on duty seven (7) days and alternate the responsibility for patient care. We also have a team of doctors who assist with care in the unit on a twenty four (24) hour basis.
The Nurse Unit Manager works from 8 am to 4.30 pm Monday to Friday. To assist in the running of the unit there is a Clinical Nurse Unit Manager / Team Leader in charge of the unit every shift and a team of highly qualified nurses delivering quality care.
We also have two (2) Clinical Nurse Educators available for the educational support of all staff members. The other members of the Health Care Team include physiotherapists, a pharmacist, dietician, occupational therapist, pastoral care and social a worker.
