Unit Services
Services include ventilatory support, non-ventilatory support, cardiac monitoring, renal, burns, cardiac non-surgical, neurosurgical, spinal, paediatric, trauma, general surgical.
Here at Orange Base hospital we have a Critical Care Service that has 12 beds: 3 Intensive Care, 4 High Dependency and 5 Coronary Care Beds. Patients in the unit can be placed on monitors that show us their heart rate and their blood pressure. We also have machines (called ventilators) that can assist the patient in their breathing. Not all patients who come to our unit need a ventilator to help them breathe. Our patients may require the support of a dialysis machine or temporary pacemaker, which we can provide.
Many of our patients require care after Acute Myocardial Infarction (heart attack) or Cardiac Arrest (chaotic, ineffective electrical activity in the heart).Patients that require specialised care – e.g. burns, brain (neuro) surgery or heart (cardiac) surgery will be transferred as soon as possible to a specialised intensive care unit at another hospital.
Unit Staff
Two (2) doctors (Intensive Care Staff Specialists), who have trained in intensive care medicine, lead our unit. One or the other is present in the unit daily.
When not in the unit they can be reached by telephone. We also have one less senior doctor who covers the unit during the hours of hours of 7am to 1am, seven days a weekWe have the equivalent of approximately 35 full time Registered Nurses staffing our area. The majority of these nurses have Intensive Care, Critical Care or Coronary Care qualifications. There is a senior nurse in charge of the unit every shift.
If a patient needs help with their breathing (on a ventilator) then each shift, one nurse will look after that patient. If a patient can breathe without the help of a ventilator, one nurse may be taking care of two to four patients during the shift. Our unit also has the help of Allied Health Professionals such as physiotherapist, pharmacist, dietician and social worker through the day.
