Unit Services
The Royal North Shore Hospital Intensive Care Unit is a combination of 3 units spread across Level 6. The three units are General ICU, 13 beds, Cardiothoracic ICU, 9 beds, and Neuro ICU, 8 beds. All three units provide invasive and non-invasive ventilatory support, cardiac monitoring and renal support, while the General and Neuro ICUs provide specialised trauma and surgical services. In addition, General ICU also provides specialised spinal and severe burns services.
Unit Staff
The Intensive Care Unit is covered by a multidisciplinary team. Medically, it is led by Intensive Care Specialists, with Intensive Care Registrars and Resident Medical Officers covering the units when the Specialist is not present. However, they are always contactable via page or phone. There is a Nurse Manager responsible for the Intensive Care floor, as well, each Intensive Care has a Nursing Unit Manager.
The ratio of nurses to patients is determined by the acuity of the patient, and will either be cared for by one nurse or if stable and non-ventilated, one nurse will look after two patients.
In addition to nursing and medical staff the multidisciplinary team is completed by Allied Health Professionals such as pharmacists, social workers, physiotherapists and chaplainacy services.
Other Hospital Services
Our hospital also has a separate Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (for patients after their heart and/or lung surgery) and a Coronary Care Unit (for patients with non-surgical heart problems).
