A Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) is a device that takes over some of the function of the heart when it is critically weak. It is most commonly used while waiting for a suitable donor heart to be available for transplant.

Ventilators are commonly known as breathing machines because they support patients to breathe for themselves, or can take over breathing for a patient completely. Some people also refer to them as life support machines, although this is not strictly true.

Under Water Seal Drain & Chest Tube

A chest tube is a long hollow tube inserted between the ribs and into the pleural space. An underwater seal drain (UWSD) is the specialized drain, which is attached to the chest tube. Chest tubes are normally inserted under a local anaesthetic or under a general anaesthetic if the patient is undergoing chest surgery.
