Evidence Based Practise

  • Bandolier : Evidence based thinking about health care. The Bandolier site is not specific to critical care but none-the-less offers a broad range of information including a glossary and education.
  • Best Evidence Topics (BETs) The core purpose of BETs is to provide the clinician with answers to common clinical questions utilising a systematic review of the literature. The site offers a number of search options. The review process is a modified version of David Sackett's CATs (Critically Appraised Topics) from Oxford.
  • Centre for Evidence Based Medicine The goal of this website is to help develop, disseminate, and evaluate resources that can be used to practise and teach EBM for undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education for health care professionals from a variety of clinical disciplines. Includes sections on practising EBM, syllabi for practising EBM , teaching EBM, EBM resources (Journals, websites, CD and textbooks) and a Glossary.
  • Cochrane Collaboration this is the homepage for Cochrane. Here you will find the Handbook fo reviewers as well as the open learning material. A must for both novice and expert reviewers.
  • Evidence Based Decision Making RNSH Set up by Dr Gordon Doig the primary purpose of this site is to support health care decision making by providing access to a set of tools that can help decision makers to better understand and utilize the principles of evidence-based decision making, summarize key articles through the use of a critical appraisal journal club to help illustrate the application of EBDM principles, provide links to other sites that teach and embrace the principles of EBDM, foster communication between decision makers in order to discuss and appraise the ways that evidence can be used.
  • Evidence Base Medicine Hayward Medical Communications' evidence-based medicine (EBM) web pages feature the valuable 'What is series', a series of publications on key concepts required to understand EBM.
  • Excellence in Nursing Knowledge is backed by the Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International, Nursing Knowledge International, in conjunction with the Joanna Briggs Institute and Blackwell Publishing. ENK offers nurses one of the most comprehensive collections of evidence-based nursing resources available.A link to a new journal Worldviews on Evidence-based nursing (Blackwell) is included.
  • Institute for Health care Improvement This site is in the forefront of running campaigns aimed reducing health associated mortality. Latest campaign is the 100K Campaign. Includes Sepsis and Ventilator bundles as well as essential tools on how to improve, how to measure the improvement and tools to use.
  • National Guideline Clearinghouse The National Guideline Clearinghouse™ (NGC™) is a comprehensive database of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines and related documents. The NGC mission is to provide physicians, nurses, and other health professionals, health care providers, health plans, integrated delivery systems, purchasers and others an accessible mechanism for obtaining objective, detailed information on clinical practice guidelines and to further their dissemination, implementation and use.
  • The Australian Centre for Evidence Based Clinical Practice The Australian Centre for Evidence Based Clinical Practice (ACEBCP) is a resource centre for clinicians, researchers, health service managers and consumers with an interest in improving the quality and safety of health care through the application of best evidence. The ACEBCP is a joint initiative of Flinders Medical Centre Division of Medicine and the Flinders University Schools of Medicine and Nursing.
  • The Joanna Briggs Institute The Joanna Briggs Institute was an initiative of Royal Adelaide Hospital and the University of Adelaide. The formation of the Institute arose from the recognition of a need for a collaborative approach to the evaluation of evidence derived from a diverse range of sources, including experience, expertise and all forms of rigorous research and the translation, transfer and utilisation of the "best available" evidence into health care practice.
  • Netting the Evidence This UK site is intended to facilitate evidence-based healthcare by providing support and access to helpful organisations and useful learning resources, such as an evidence-based virtual library, software and journals.

  • ACT Health ACT Health is responsible for providing the people of the Australian Capital Territory with the best health care possible through the implementation of the ACT Health Action Plan 2002, and aims to be recognised for delivering the best health care and health-related services in Australia.
  • Department of Health and Community Services, Northern Territory The Department of Health and Community Services exists to provide services that work together for the health and well-being of our communities: maximising physical health but also the mental, social and environmental well-being of all people in the Northern Territory.
  • Department of Health and Human Services, Tasmania The Department of Health and Human Services brings together a wide range of services for the people of Tasmania - providing health care services in hospitals and the community, offering a range of support services, promoting better health, maintaining services for elderly people and those with disabilities, and providing housing programs.
  • Department of Health Government of Western Australia The Department of Health's mission as the principal health authority is to promote, protect, maintain and restore the health of the people of Western Australia.

  • Department of Human Services Victoria The Department of Human Services is Victoria's largest Government department and employs over 12,000 people directly and over 80,000 people indirectly through organisations such as hospitals and aged care facilities, ambulance services and community service agencies.   • Health Workforce Australia This site provides information on health workforce planning in Australia, the Australian health workforce and the activities of the various national health workforce advisory committees that report to the Australian Health Ministers' Advisory Council (AHMAC) and Australian Health Ministers.
  • Institute for Clinical Excellence The mission of the Institute for Clinical Excellence is: To change health care across New South Wales to make it safer and better for patients. To achieve this ICE will: Work collaboratively on high priority clinical projects across multiple sites being orientated solely on improved patient outcomes, drive implementation of Clinical Practice Improvement and champion the lessons learned across the system, provide education and training to support the implementation of improvement projects and support targeted health services research.
  • Medicines Australia Medicines Australia represents research based pharmaceutical companies, who discover, develop and manufacture prescription medicines. Journals

  • Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Anaesthesia and Intensive Care is published by the Australian Society of Anaesthetists. It is the official journal of the Australian Society of Anaesthetists and of the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Society. The Journal presents original articles of scientific and clinical interest in the specialties of Anaesthesia, Intensive Care, Pain Therapy and related disciplines.
  • British Medical Journal This site launched in May 1995 and contains the full text of all articles published in the weekly BMJ since January 1994. In addition, it contains material that is unique to the website. Currently access to the entire site is free. From 2005, some users will have to pay for some content on bmj.com.

Medical Sites

  • Australasian College for Emergency Medicine Web site for the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine. Excellent series of Policies available online under 'Policies'.
  • Australian Medical Association The Australian Medical Association (AMA) is an independent organisation which represents more than 27,000 doctors, whether salaried or in private practice, whether general practitioners, specialists, teachers and researchers, or doctors in training. The AMA, as the peak health advocacy organisation, exists to advance the professional interests of doctors and the health of the community.
  • Joint Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine In November 2001, the Councils of Royal Australian College of Physicians (RACP) and Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) agreed to form the Joint Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine, responsible for all intensive care training and certification in Australia and New Zealand. In February 2002, the Foundation Fellowship was established, comprising 420 Fellows.
  • Royal Australasian College of Physicians The RACP was founded in 1938. It is a professional organisation consisting of over 9,000 Fellows and Trainees combined. Fellows are qualified physicians and paediatricians who completed their training with the College. They practise in all Australian States and Territories, New Zealand and in many countries throughout the world.
  • Royal Australasian College of Surgeons The Royal Australasian College of Surgeons is an internationally recognised organisation for 5400 surgeons who are based mainly in Australia and New Zealand. As a fellowship based organisation, the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons strives to ensure the highest standard of safe and comprehensive surgical care to the community through excellence in surgical education, training, professional development and support.

Nursing Sites

  • American Association of Critical Care Nurses Online Established in 1969 to help educate nurses working in newly developed intensive care units, the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) claims to be the world's largest specialty nursing organization. The more interesting information such as Clinical Practice Guidelines is for members only but there is a fascinating Bulletin Board running called 'Discussions'. The navigation of the site fails with Mozilla Firefox but is fine with Internet Explorer.
  • Australian College of Critical Care Nurses The Australian College of Critical Care Nurses (formerly the Confederation of Australian Critical Care Nurses - CACCN), is the professional organisation representing nurses practising or interested in critical care in Australia.
  • Australian Nursing Federation The Australian Nursing Federation (ANF) was established in 1924. The ANF is the national union for nurses and the largest professional nursing organisation in Australia. The ANF's core business is the industrial and professional representation of nurses and nursing through the activities of a national office and branches in every State and Territory.
  • The College of Nursing The College of Nursing was established as a professional body to represent, assist, educate and support nurses. With members in every Australian State and Territory, and in 17 countries worldwide, The College of Nursing speaks for nursing professionals throughout Australia.

Quality & Safety

  • Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) This is USA government site for healthcare research and quality. It contains so much information you will need to look for yourself!
  • Australasian Association for Quality in Health Care The Australasian Association for Quality in Health Care is an organisation that promotes, through its membership, the culture of quality improvement and excellence in all aspects of healthcare delivery.
  • Australian Council for Safety and Quality in Health Care The Australian Council for Safety and Quality in Health Care was established in January 2000 by Australian Health Ministers to lead national efforts to improve the safety and quality of health care provision in Australia. It reports annually to all Health Ministers and is supported by all State and Territory jurisdictions. The Council works closely with other national bodies to ensure that its work program complements the efforts of others.
  • NSW Therapuetic Advisory Group (NSW TAG)represents experts in drug therapy from the teaching hospitals in NSW and provides NSW Health and hospitals with recommendations to improve medication safety.
  • The International Society for Quality in Health Care The International Society for Quality in Health Care, is a non-profit, independent organisation with members in over 70 countries. ISQua works to provide services to guide health professionals, providers, researchers, agencies, policy makers and consumers, to achieve excellence in healthcare delivery to all people, and to continuously improve the quality and safety of care.
  • Patient Safety Net - (AHRQ-USA Government)'a continuously updated annotated & carefully selected collection of patient safety news, literature, tools and resources.' This site can be easily browsed by subject including safety target, approach to improving safety, error types, clinical area, target audience and setting of care. The site has a search engine and includes a CLASSICS section.
