State Wide Guidelines ~ Intensive Care Collaborative Project

Introduction

The NSW Intensive Care Coordination and Monitoring Unit (ICCMU) considers promotion and dissemination of evidence-based practice as core business and seeks to achieve this through clinical networking and a collaborative framework.  ICCMU has designed the Intensive Care Collaborative (ICC) Project to achieve this goal.  The ICC is composed of a number of Guideline Development Networks (GDN).  These GDNs are charged with responsibility of systematically reviewing the evidence and developing evidence-based clinical guideline recommendations for application across all ICUs in NSW. The ICCMU website (www.intensivecare.org.au) will act as the central repository for these guidelines, facilitating dissemination and equity of access. The first steps in this process has been to collect clinical practices, guidelines and policies from units across the state. These can be found on Guidelines by Index and Guidelines by Type pages.

Intensive Care Collaborative Project

The guideline development began in June 2005 with a seminar for senior nursing clinicians from intensive care units from across the state. (see Newsletter for details). Following the workshop six guideline development networks (GDN) were formed. This first round of guideline development will focus on nursing oriented guidelines and is expected to be completed in November 2007. Over the past 2 years the GDNs have reviewed the scope of practice for each guideline, conducted systematic literature reviews and developed recommendations for practice. After the guidelines were written a external validation process was successfully completed for each guideline. PDF copies of the guidelines can be found under the links below. The full systematic literature reviews will be available early in 2007.

ICCMU wishes to thank all of the members of the various GDNs and the academic team for their hard work and persistence. The Project would not have been realised without the collaborative efforts of this group of professionals.
