Indwelling Urinary Catheter (IDC)

Intensive Care patients require the use of an Indwelling Urinary Catheter (IDC) to measure the amount of urine they produce and to control bladder function.

Indwelling Urinary Catheter

IDC

How Does it Work?

An IDC is a soft flexible tube that is placed into the bladder to drain urine. The catheter is inserted into the urethra and is then connected to a urinary drainage bag. An IDC is used until the measurement of the amount of urine is no longer needed or the patient regains the ability to control urination.

Are There Any Complications?

All Intensive Care interventions and procedures carry a degree of potential risk even when performed by skilled and experienced staff. Please discuss these issues with the medical and nursing staff who are caring for the patient.

Any Questions?

Of course, if you have any questions or concerns, please discuss them with the ICU nurses and doctors.
